School of Literature
The School of Literature of Shanxi University has been of great importance to Shanxi University's development, and a great number of well-known scholars have given lectures at the school, such as Huang Kan and Li Lianggong. Those two were under the tutorship of Mr. Zhang Binglin, guru of Chinese classics, which allowed the School of Literature’s education to be closely associated with Mr. Zhang.
The School of Literature has made huge progress in teaching and academic research after the founding of People's Republic of China, while the reform and opening up allowed it to experience another great-leap-forward development. Different undertakings of the school have achieved rapid development after entering the 21st century. Today, the school has become matured in teaching, scientific research, discipline construction and other aspects, and has developed an upright, profound, open and lively education style, which allowed it to become the benchmark among Chinese faculties of academies in Shanxi.
As of May 2011, the School of Literature has 63 full-time lecturers, including 14 professors, 13 associate professors and 31 lecturers with a doctorate. Six of the lecturers are doctoral advisors, while 32 of them are postgraduate advisors. The school boasts its strong teaching force, with its lecturers winning nine national awards and over 30 provincial and ministry level awards, and publishing over 459 academic papers as well as monographs over the past five years. A number of young lecturers have shown their talents in addition to old lecturers, which made the entire school full of vigor and vitality.
The School of Literature currently has 1,276 students, including 782 undergraduates and 494 Doctoral and Master's degree candidates, which makes it a first-class school with the largest number of students in Shanxi University. Since the beginning of this year, students from the school’s different majors have performed well in the scientific, recreational and sports activities at different levels. The school has, in total, published over 500 academic papers and received nine national awards, as well as 24 provincial and ministry level awards, and its graduates are well received by the country and society from the perspectives of morals, intelligence and physical fitness, which fully reflect the school’s achievements in talent development.
The School of Literature has five faculties: Literature Faculty, Language Faculty, Drama and Movie Faculty, Advertising Faculty and Journalism and Communication Faculty. There are 12 disciplines entitled for conferring a Master’s degree at the moment: Ancient Chinese Literature, Chinese Philology, Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature, Comparative Literature and World Literature, Theory of Literature and Art, Study of Chinese Classical Text, Folklore, Journalism, Communication, Radio and Television Art, Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages as well as Master of Journalism and Communication. Among the disciplines entitled for conferring a Master’s degree, Chinese Language and Literature along with Journalism are primary disciplines.
The school has 2 disciplines entitled for conferring a Doctorate in ancient Chinese Literature and Chinese Philology, while the discipline of Ancient Chinese Literature is a key discipline of Shanxi province. Postgraduate education offered by the School of Literature of Shanxi University started in 1978, and it has developed a great number of high-level, quality talents for over 32 years, who have made great contributions to the different undertakings of the country and Shanxi province.
The School of Literature of Shanxi University has a secondary research center of Chinese Classics Research Center, which is a key research base for humanities and social sciences in Shanxi province. It also has a secondary research institute of Folklore and Folk Literature Research Institute. These two research institutions, along with six laboratories under the school, cover almost all of the research-type disciplines of the school, and serve as a link between its scientific research and teaching, as well as a fundamental mechanism for the overall development of scientific research.
The School of Literature launched its Great Lectures on Chinese Classics, on May 8, 2008, which were delivered by leading lecturers in the related disciplines of the school and opened to the public for free. It’s committed to propagating excellent traditional Chinese culture, inheriting the great spirit and virtues of Chinese people, and building a harmonious, profound and future-oriented human value orientation.
The school has a library and laboratories for teaching and scientific research, and the library has over 200,000 books, which are available for lecturers and students of the school. Laboratories include a speech laboratory, media laboratory, as well as a film and television gathering and editing room, which are well-equipped and used frequently.
Department of History and Culture
Shanxi University's History and Culture Dept is one of its oldest, with a history of more than 100 years. It has 75 staff members, with 66 teachers and nine instructors and administrators, with 13 professors and 15 associate professors, and 43 PhDs or people studying for a doctor's degree, with a solid foundation, rigorous teaching methods, vitality, and vigor.
The department has Level-1 doctoral degree programs in Chinese history and archeology, a Level-1 master's degree program in world history, a Level-2 master's degree program in tourism management, a key provincial program in modern Chinese history, a key provincial key program in tourism management, and post-doc research facilities for Chinese history and archeology.
The department has always considered teaching and research to be important and its history major is important in Shanxi, with the Introduction to Regional Social History being considered a top national course and its Modern World History and History of Ancient China top provincial courses. And, many of its undergraduate courses are considered outstanding and two of its teachers have been nominated for provincial outstanding teacher awards and two for university outstanding teacher awards. Qiao Zhiqiang's Modern Chinese Social History and Prof Cheng Renqian’s World Economics and Politics have earned Education Ministry Excellent Teaching awards over the last two decades. Three undergraduate textbooks compiled by department professors are used nationally with ministry backing.
The department's teachers have published 926 articles in national and provincial journals, some of which have won national, provincial and ministerial scientific research awards. It is involved in at least 100 research projects with more than 7-million yuan in funding, 20 of them national social science projects and ministry humanities and social sciences projects, which give impetus to undergraduate teaching improvements.
The department has 802 on campus, 573 of them undergraduates, 211 grad students, and 18 doctoral students, many of them from other provinces or autonomous regions. There are 224 undergraduates majoring in history, 253 in tourism management, and 96 in archeology and museum studies.
The department has always considered foreign academic exchanges important and, in recent years, has sent more than 20 faculty members to other universities in china or abroad and has helped organize almost a dozen national and international academic conferences, inviting many visiting professors from universities and research institutes in at least two dozen countries.

School of Philosophy and Sociology
The predecessor of the School of Philosophy and Sociology of Shanxi University is the Philosophy Faculty established in 1980, which changed to its current name in 2003. The school has 50 teaching and administrative staffs at the moment, including seven professors and ten associate professors. It's in possession of primary disciplines entitled for conferring a Doctorate and Master's degree in Philosophy and primary discipline entitled for conferring a Master's degree in Demonology and Sociology, and offers three Bachelor's degree programs of Philosophy, Sociology and Social Work. The school has experienced steady great-leap-forward development over the past three decades, and has developed a great number of talented people of different levels with junior college, Bachelor's and Master’s degrees and Doctorates. Those talented people across China have gradually become the backbones of different sectors, particularly in institutions of higher learning, academic research institutes, Party and government organizations as well as enterprises and public institutions.
After entering the new century, the school has conducted over 120 different scientific research projects, including over 30 national-level projects, and has received scientific research funding of over 6 million yuan. It has published over 100 academic monographs, translated works and teaching materials along with more than 600 papers, and over 200 of them were published in Chinese Social Sciences, Philosophical Researches, Philosophical Trends, Studies in Dialectics of Nature, Studies in Philosophy of Science and Technology and other key journals. It has also received over 40 awards for different scientific researches.
For over 30 years, the school has followed the developing law of higher education, and has taken to serving local economic and social development of Shanxi as its fundamental purpose, and making the development of quality, innovative talented people as its highest objective. It has gradually developed a modern, advanced and scientific professional curriculum, and built over 20 practical teaching bases.
The school has been actively introducing advanced teaching material at home and abroad, and supporting the development of classical courses, bilingual courses, practical courses and excellent courses, among which, the courses of "Principles of Marxist Philosophy" and "Logic" have been awarded as "Excellent Courses of Shanxi Province". Investigation and research reports made by the school's students have won the first-place prize in the National University Student "Challenge Cup" many times. The journal of Owl, founded by the students in the school, which boasts of unique characteristics and high quality, provides them with a platform for scientific research practices.
School of Foreign Language of Shanxi University
The predecessor of the School of Foreign Language of Shanxi University is the English Literature Faculty of Arts Department of Shanxi Grand School established in 1919. After over 90 years of development, the school has got 6 Bachelor's degree programs of English Language and Literature, Japanese Language and Literature, French Language and Literature, Russian Language and Literature, German Language and Literature and Translation. The school had established its first secondary discipline entitled for conferring a Master's degree in English Language and Literature as early as 1984, and then added three more disciplines entitled for conferring a Master's degree in Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Japanese Language and Literature and French Language and Literature successively. Among which, Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics is a key discipline at the provincial level.
The primary discipline entitled for conferring a Master's degree in Foreign Languages and Literatures was approved with the Academic Degrees Committee of Shanxi Province's review and approval of the Academic Degrees Committee under the State Council in 2010, and a Master’s degree program of Translation was added in the same year. The school successfully applied for an out of catalogue secondary discipline for conferring a Doctorate in Verbal Communications, and received approval in 2011. It added a Bachelor’s degree program of Translation in 2012 with the Shanxi Provincial Education Department’s review as well as the Ministry of Education’s filing and approval.
The school has a secondary research institute for Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, a Foreign Languages Research Institute of Shanxi University as well as research laboratories for Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, British and American Literature, Translation, Comparison between Chinese and Foreign Language and Culture, and University Foreign Language Teaching.
The school also coordinates a Training Center for the Foreign Language Examinations of Shanxi University and the Foreign Language Training Department for People Going Abroad in Shanxi Province. It holds TOEFL, GRE, BEC, JLPT, NAETI, WSK, CATTI, BFT and HSK.
Lecturers of the school's various majors have conducted a great number of related professional studies, and have achieved substantial results. They have published 271 papers in well-known Chinese and international academic journals as well as 34 monographs and teaching materials, they received 21 awards at the provincial and ministry level and above, and have conducted 5 projects funded by the National Social Science Fund and the Ministry of Education's Youth Fund of Humanities and Social Sciences, along with completing 68 provincial and ministry level projects.
The school boasts of excellent teaching conditions, as it is in possession of 2 teaching buildings, which cover a teaching area of 3,558.3 square meters and a scientific research area of 687.8 square meters. Originally, it had one computer room, six language laboratories and five multimedia classrooms. It actively raised funds and built two digital language laboratories, one simultaneous interpretation and translation laboratory and seven multimedia classrooms in 2011, and those additional laboratories cover a total area of around 1,500 square meters .
The school has one set of satellite television receiving and central control systems, while the Information Center received over 50,000 books and audio-visual materials, as well as more than 90 kinds of Chinese and foreign periodicals, and the entire school is covered by a campus network.
The school has outstanding teaching force, and it has 138 teaching and administrative staff members, including 5 professors, 29 associate professors, 2 doctoral advisors and 19 postgraduate advisors. 16 lecturers have received a doctorate and 15 lecturers are studying for a doctorate. Translator and translation theorists Mr. Chang Feng, Mr. Nie Chongxin, Mr. Peng Fumin and Mr. Gao Jian all had given lectures here for a long period of time, and the excellent teaching and research traditions have been passed down. The school engaged Mr. Ji Chaozhu, Former UN Under-Secretary-General and senior diplomatist as Honorary Dean, and hired more than 10 well-known Chinese scholars as visiting professors and part-time professors, such as Gu Riguo, Xu Shenghuan and He Ziran. Different majors all have foreign experts for teaching.
The school has been attaching great importance to the strengthening of its external academic exchanges, it has carried out many academic exchanges with the Beijing Foreign Studies University, the Shanghai International Studies University and other well-known universities in China, and has built up an academic exchange mechanism with a number of overseas universities, such as Pfeiffer University in North Carolina, Aston University in the UK, Rikkyo University in Japan, Tokyo International University, Yokohama National University, and the Sydney University of Technology.
After over 90 years of development, together with its strengths, the School of Foreign Language has become a base for development of outstanding interdisciplinary talents in the province of Shanxi, which integrates the functions of foreign language teaching, scientific research and social services. School of Political Science and Public Management
The School of Political Science and Public Management of Shanxi University boasts of a long history, with its predecessor being the Political Science Department of Law Faculty of Shanxi University founded in 1919, and a separate faculty was established in 1931. The faculty, which changed its name to School of Political Science and Public Management in 2003, is the only academy with 3 primary disciplines of Political Science, Public Management and Marxist Theory in the provinve of Shanxi.
The school has around 80 teaching and administrative staff members, who are responsible for the teaching of the school's professional courses and the public politics course of the entire university, as well as conducting research tasks. It has four doctoral advisors, eight professors and 21 associate professors. 16 lecturers have received a doctorate, while nine lecturers are studying for a doctorate. The school has over 600 full-time undergraduates, more than 300 postgraduates and over 260 MPA students. It's in possession of a modern MPA case study laboratory, a network and experimental center, and a library with 72,000 books and over 150 kinds of international and Chinese journals.
From the perspective of scientific research over the past 5 years, the school has successively undertaken over 50 projects at the State, provincial and ministry level, has published over 20 monographs, translated works and teaching materials, as well as over 190 papers in journals at home and abroad. They have received more than 10 awards for achievements in teaching and scientific research at the provincial and ministry level and above. It has developed several research directions with unique characteristics and certain advantages, and has contributed a number of research results with great impact.
The school has been vigorously carrying out various academic exchanges. School of Education Science
Shanxi University's Education Science School was founded in 1929, and has since more than 1,000 graduates, and more than 5,000 undergrads and junior college students over the years. It currently has Level-1 master's degrees for pedagogy and psychology and is a national master's degree training institution, with three undergraduate majors in pedagogy, applied psychology, and preschool education, with pedagogy as a specialty for Shanxi province.
The school has a psychology laboratory with more than 100 instruments to provide conditions for teaching and research, and a piano room and dance studio and library with more than 20,000 books, over 190 newspapers, and 10,000 bound volumes of periodicals.
Over the years, the school has developed honored traditions in providing a comprehensive approach, clear direction, systematic study of the Chinese classics, solid skills, rigorous scholarship, hard study, tough training, improvement by gaining new knowledge, and the integration of theory and practice.
It has an older generation of educators and psychologists, such as Shi Guoya, Ding Yuchao, and Xin Zhihua, engaged in teaching and research and who influence the "diligence, pragmaticism, and seeking goodness and truth" atmosphere. In recent times, it has been training psychology counselors with a national training plan and has developed professional education projects involving experts in education, psychology, management and other fields.
It currently provides special training in classroom teaching and education philosophy, with the latest teaching and management methods, from primary to middle school to college and can help local government and education administrators with their consultation and research services in planning and decision-making, and track the school reforms at relatively disadvantaged schools.
School of Economics and Management
This school is one of the university's most advanced, with a Management and Decision-making Research Center that is a key unit for the humanities and social sciences in Shanxi province, and has the following: a post-doctoral research area for management science and engineering majors; a Level-1 doctoral program in management science and engineering; a key provincial management science and engineering major; a key provincial research area for the humanities and social sciences for management and decision-making research; Level-1 master’s degree programs in theoretical economics, management science and engineering, project management, and library and information sciences and archives management; Level-2 master degree programs in industrial economics and quantitative economics; master’s degree programs for an MBA, logistics engineering, project management, industry, library and information sciences, and engineering management; provincial postgrad education at the Shanxi Fenjiu Engineering Postgraduate Education Innovation Center and Shanxi Energy Economics Postgraduate Education Innovation Center; and a postgraduate education innovation center at the Source-driven Local Business Transformation Postgraduate Education Innovation Base.
It has undergraduate majors in business management, economics, international trade, finance, accounting, e-commerce, information management and engineering, and software engineering, and an education training base for e-commerce. The school is a driver of the university's Comprehensive Competent Improvement Project for Resource-driven Economic Transformation and Development Research, with the following: laboratories for economics, business management, international trade, finance, accounting, information management, e-commerce and software engineering; the university's Information Management Research Institute, its Central China Development Research Center, its Resource-driven Economic Transformation and Development Research Centre, its Industrial Economic Research Institute, its Investment Research Centre, and its Strategy Management Research Centre in conjunction with the Shanxi Coal International Energy Co.
It has 104 faculty members, with 16 professors and 31 associate professors, as well as six doctoral supervisors, and 25 postgraduate supervisors. It has two teachers who get special State Council funds, one with Education Ministry funding, one with a Shanxi university Outstanding Innovative Faculty award, one with a Shanxi Young Scientist Project award, seven with Shanxi Young Academic lead Researcher titles, and two members of the Shanxi 100 Talented People Program. Its professors, such as Liu Weiqi, Li Changhong, Liang Jiye, Li Jingfeng, Zhang Xingdong, Rong Heping, Fei Chengfa, Shi Tao, Mei Jianjun and Gao Xiangyi make up a powerful team of academic researchers.
Majors are developed to suit economic and social needs and the school trains talented people in bachelor's, master's and PhD programs with increased interaction between academic research and teaching, and currently has 2,000 students. In recent years, the faculty have achieved a lot in research in finance engineering and risk management, logistics and supply chains, management theory and methodology, finance management and accounting, information management, business administration, theoretical economics, and industrial economics and have published more than 800 papers in prominent academic journals in China and oversea and more than 60 books. They have received at least 30 awards from local and national authorities, including a China International Exhibition of Invention Gold Award, Shanxi Science and Technology Award, and Shanxi Outstanding Social Science Research award, and have completed at least 20 National Natural Science Foundation, National Social Science Foundation, China Post-doctor Science Foundation, Education Ministry Humanities and Social Science Research projects, as well as 863 Projects, and at least 80 provincial research projects and 80 decision-making reports for business.
The school emphasizes academic communications and has connections with many universities, including the US's University of Idaho, the University College of Cape Breton, Australia's University of Technology Sydney, Russia's St. Petersburg State University, Japan's Rikkyo University and Yokohama National University, and China’s Peking University and Xi'an Jiaotong University.
Law School of Shanxi University
Shanxi University Law School, formally known as Shanxi Grand School, is steeped in heritage and was founded in 1906, as part of the three original faculties of arts, law and science.
Boasting a long history of excellence in its teaching staff, the Shanxi University Law School currently has 51 full-time lecturers, including 9 professors and 18 associate professors. It also houses a part-time team of professors, which consists of over 60 well-known authoritative experts and scholars from legal practices and the country's jurisprudential circle. Amongst the lecturers at School of Law, 26 of them have either received a doctorate, or are currently studying for one. A number of lecturers from the school are regularly are hired as legislative consultants and advisers to both the government, expert public security consultative committees, procuratorate offices and courts, as well as legal advisors to large state-owned enterprises.
Shanxi University's Law School has been ranked among the top 50 law schools in universities across China, and in 2012, ranked 21st, thanks to its comprehensive disciplines and majors.
The scientific research standards of the Law School have seen continuous improvement over the years. As such, it has established over 50 teaching and scientific research practice bases at public security branches, procuratorate offices, courts and other departments for legal practice in Shanxi province, which constitute stable networks for teaching and practice.
School of Physical Education
The School of Physical Education of Shanxi University is among the first of 16 physical education faculties and departments established in China. So far, the school has one Doctorate program, four Master's degree programs and three Bachelor's degree programs. It has also made remarkable achievements in talent development, scientific researches, teaching force, external exchanges, operating conditions, sports standard and other aspects. The school ranked in first-place of the total group score at the "National Basic Skill Contest for Students Majoring in Physical Education" in 1999 and received the title of "Advanced Unit for Teaching" from Shanxi provincial education department. At the 6th Games for University Students in 2000, the school won 4 gold medals, 2 silver medals and 7 bronze medals, making it to the final Top Eight in the country, and won the "President's Cup".
The school has a Physical Education Faculty, Sports Faculty, Sports Sociology Faculty, Teaching Department and Postgraduate Department of Public Physical Education, as well as a Traditional Ethnic Sports Research Institute. It has 96 teaching and administrative staff members, including 11 professors, 25 associate professors, 3 doctoral advisors, 14 postgraduate advisors and 13 national referees. School of Mathematical Sciences
The School of Mathematical Sciences is one of Shanxi University's colleges with the longest history. The college has a Doctorate program in Fundamental Mathematics, which is a provincial-level key program in the Shanxi province. It has two first-level discipline programs in Mathematics and Statistics, and one second-level discipline program in Pattern Recognition and Intelligent Systems. Moreover, it has three post-graduate programs in Control Engineering, Applied Statistics, and Mathematical Teaching. There are also four undergraduate programs in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Information and Computing Sciences, Statistics, and Software Engineering (Service Outsourcing). Of which, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics is a brand program of the Shanxi province.
The college has 96 faculty members. Of which, there are 13 professors, 25 associate professors, and 33 lecturers. Among them, there are also nine doctoral advisers and 43 graduate student advisers. Fifty-seven of the teachers have Doctoral degrees. The college has two distinguished teachers of mathematics of Shanxi province. Seven teachers have been included in the "131 Leading Talent Project" of Shanxi's higher institutions. Four teachers have been recognized as young academic pacesetters in the higher institutions of Shanxi province, and six have been recognized as distinguished professors on Shanxi's "Hundred Talented People Project".
In recent years, the college has been focusing on team development within its disciplines, and has been endeavouring to advance its teaching and research work. The Department of Mathematics and the Department of Statistics are established under the college. There are also seven research institutes under the college, including the Institute of Nonlinear Functional Analysis, the Institute of Distributed Parameter System Control Theory, the Institute of Algebra and Geometry, the Institute of Graph Theory and Theoretical Computer Science, the Institute of Ordinary Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems, the Institute of Intelligent Computing and Control, and the Institute of Applied Statistics. All of these institutes have made tremendous achievements in teaching and research.
In the past three years, one teacher has won a provincial-level first prize in teaching achievements; two teachers have won the second prize; and another two teachers have won the Baosteel Excellent Teacher Award. The school has hosted 17 National Natural Science Foundation research projects, and 13 ministry-level and provincial-level projects. The teachers of the college have published more than 300 academic papers, and over 130 of them have been included in the Science Citation Index (SCI). They have also published more than 10 high-level papers in globally prestigious academic journals, such as the Annales de l’Institut Henri Poincare(C) Non-Linear Analysis, Journal of Algebra, Journal of Differential Equations, Journal of Functional Analysis, and in the SIAM on Control and Optimization. The teachers have won one second-place prize of the Shanxi Science and Technology Award (Natural Science) and three third-place prizes. They have also published 4 monographs and textbooks.
The college now has 16 doctoral candidates, 189 graduate students, and 774 undergraduate students. In the past three years, 50% of the students have been admitted to the graduate programs. Some of the graduates of our college have become the winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars; some have been rated as the "Top 100 National Excellent Doctoral Dissertations" with their dissertations; some have become senior research talented people of the State Council, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University, City University of Hong Kong, as well as other well-known universities and research institutes, both at home and abroad; some have become the development personnel of the large companies, such as Fenjiu Group and Tai'an Group; and some have become the technical backbones in the governments, educational institutions, industrial and commercial departments, taxation departments, transportation departments, post and telecommunication departments, and other fields.
In the past three years, the college has carried out all-round cooperation and exchanges with domestic and foreign higher institutions and research institutes, which involves inviting foreign experts to teach at the college and to implement joint research projects, sending teachers to reputed foreign universities to further their studies, and encouraging the teachers to attend high-level academic conferences.
The college now have four laboratories, covering mathematical modelling, software engineering, computer control technology, and network control technology, and these laboratories serve the teaching and research of the undergraduate students and graduate students. In 2011, with the financial support of the Central Government, the conditions of the laboratories have been thoroughly improved.
College of Physics and Electronic Engineering
The College of Physics and Electronic Engineering was co-founded by the Physics Faculty, Electronic Information Science and Technology Faculty, Electro-Optical Research Institute and the Theoretical Physics Research Institute in 1997. Since the establishment of the college, and after 15 years of construction, it has built an excellent platform for teaching and scientific research, and has formed a comprehensive development system for talented people.
The college has a Physics Faculty, an Electronic Information Science and Technology Faculty, an Optoelectronics Science and Technology Faculty, an Electro-Optical Research Institute, a Theoretical Physics Research Institute, a Laser Spectroscopy Laboratory and a Modern Communication Technology Research Institute. The college has 166 teaching and administrative staffs, including 131 teachers, 12 assistant teachers and 12 Party and management cadres. The teaching force consists of 34 professors, 39 associate professors and 6 senior experimentalists, which include 26 doctoral advisors and 90 postgraduate advisors. It currently has 1,060 students, including 742 undergraduates, 228 Master’s degree candidates and 90 Doctoral candidates. Since its establishment, the college has provided the society with over 10,000 outstanding talents.
The college has eight disciplines entitled for conferring a Doctorate, one post-doctoral research station, 12 disciplines entitled for conferring a Master’s degree, and two majors for a Master's degree in engineering. Among which, Optical Engineering and Information and Communication Engineering are primary disciplines entitled for conferring a Master’s degree (including two secondary disciplines). Besides, it has five Bachelor's degree programs of Physics (national base for researches on basic science and development of talents in teaching), Applied Physics, Electronic Information Science and Technology, Optical Information Science and Technology and Software Engineering (towards electronic technology).
The college is now in possession of the National Key Laboratory of Quantum Optics and Quantum Optics Devices and national key disciplines of optics. Theoretical Physics, along with Atomic and Molecular Physics, are provincial-level key disciplines, Optical Engineering is a provincial level key discipline under development, while Information and Communication Engineering is a key discipline under the support of Shanxi province. Besides, it also has the Engineering Research Center of Shanxi province.
Its Physics Experiment Center is a national-level experimental teaching demonstration center. Its optical and atomic physics teaching team is a national level teaching team, and the major of physics is a national level featured major. The college owns two national level excellent courses, Modern Physics Experiments and Atomic Physics, and three branded majors of Shanxi province, which include Physics, Electronic Information Science and Technology, and Optical Information Science and Technology. Academics & Research
Since the year of 2002, the college has been focusing on collaborative innovation system construction, and has yielded substantial results in basic theory research, and application development and innovation. The college plays the central role in China's "863 Program", key project of National Natural Science Funds and national and provincial major scientific and technological projects. It has received a National Award for Science and Technology Progress and a National Award for Technological Invention. Its academic faculty has published a series of academic papers in internationally known magazines such as JACS and Angew.
The college puts forth effort in the university-industry cooperation. The project of China's "863 Program" — "Localization Research of Two-Stage Hydrogenation Catalyst of 1, 4 - Butanediol" hosted by Professor Zhao Yongxiang, has achieved its industrialized application and was listed into "the 11th Five-Year Development Report of China Petroleum and Chemical Industry" as one of the two landmark scientific and technological achievements in basic organic raw material. Polycarboxylene based superplasticizer developed by Associate Professor Wang Ziwei has been widely used in the Beijing-Shanghai and Haerbin-Daqing high-speed passenger railways.
Talented people cultivation
In the past ten years, the college has cultivated 1,393 undergraduate students, 462 postgraduate students and 52 PhD students. More than 95% of graduates have been evaluated comprehensively as excellent and good. The success rate of fresh graduates with a bachelor's degree in the postgraduate entrance examination is 40%, and graduates’employment rate reaches 90%.
College of Life Sciences
This College of Life Science was founded in 1949, as one of modern China's first biology faculties and it has a distinguished history, excellent teaching staff and a certain amount of influence among similar colleges across China. It has key provincial majors, a key Education Ministry laboratory, and a provincial biological experiment teaching center, and its Zoology and Botany Museum functions as a national site for the popularization of science and technology among adolescents.
The undergraduate program covers bioscience, bioengineering, and food science and engineering, and has a bioengineering research center, offering three bachelor degree programs. The college can confer a doctorate in biology and handle post-doctoral research and enrolls about 150 undergraduates, 100 master's and doctoral degree candidates and three or more postdoctoral research fellows yearly. At least a dozen of its lecturers have had academic exchanges or cooperation in the US, UK and other countries.
The college currently has 14 professors, 18 associate professors, 12 lecturers and one assistant lecturer, at least 50 percent of them with a PhD. It has nine doctoral advisors, 36 postgraduate advisors and a vast amount of equipment. It has handled almost two dozen national scientific research projects and over 100 provincial or ministerial projects, and has published at least 260 papers in Chinese and international academic journals. It also holds 16 national patents and many of its scientific research findings have been put to commercial use and have brought economic and social benefits.
The college has helped establish the following: the Fenjiu Group Postgraduate Education and Innovation Center for Fenjiu Engineering Projects with the Shanxi Xinghuacun Fen Wine Factory, a provincial Food Engineering Research Center with the province’s Food Research Institute, and an Enterprise Technology R&D Center with the Taiyuan Good and Good Food Co, for the purposes of scientific and technological development and social service in line with provincial Economic and Trade Commission goals. It has also helped set up the university's School of Bioengineering in conjunction with the provincial Agricultural Sciences Academy to develop talented personnel and expand education. In recent years, its lecturers have had some important achievements in the field of economic construction and applied technology with scientific and technological value, and good market prospects.
College of Environmental & Resource Sciences
The College of Environmental & Resource Sciences is one of the key colleges constructed and developed by Shanxi University. The School has one first-level discipline-based environmental science post-doctorate program, one second-level discipline-based doctorate program of environment biological medicine science, one first-level discipline-based master's degree program of environmental science and engineering, and one master’s degree program of physical geography. Also, it has four undergraduate majors, including Environmental Science, which is a provincial level program, Environmental Engineering, which is a key discipline with provincial funding, Physical Geography, Resource and Environment, and Ecological Engineering of the Environment. The Resource and Environment Experiment Center is a provincial demo lab.
The faculty members are well deployed in terms of academic degrees. With much focus on undergraduate education, the college has a tradition of rigorous teaching and studying morale, and innovative academic research. Now, 40 teachers out of 58 staff members include 11 professors, and 10 associated professors. Also, the faculty members have 28 doctorate degree holders, 3 doctorate degree candidates, 7 doctoral supervisors and 23 postgraduate supervisors. The faculty members with a master’s degree or above are weighted at 93.2% in total.
The School always keeps balance between teaching work and academic research, and takes efforts to lay a solid foundation for Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering and Geography in terms of academic research innovation and harmonious social relationships among the faculty members.
In the past five years, the college has established two outstanding undergraduate program teams, one provincial demo lab, and four internship bases. Also, there is one awarded young leading teacher of Shanxi province, one of Shanxi’s famous provincial teachers, one awarded by the Fok Ying-Tong Education Foundation, one awarded by the 3rd Session of the Top 10 Distinguished Youth of Shanxi Universities and Colleges, and one with an Outstanding Teaching Award by the Education Department of Shangxi.
From the 11th Five Year Plan period (2006-2010) to the early 12th Five-year Plan period (2011-2015), the college has been granted with 12 programs from the National Natural Science Foundation, including one funded by the National Distinguished Young Scientists Foundation，one by the Oversea Top Talent Recruitment Plan, one by the New Century Distinguished Talent Supporting Plan, seven by the General Programs of the National Natural Science Foundation, and two by the National Natural Science Funds. Meanwhile, the college has been granted with 17 provincial programs, including five programs supported by the Natural Science Foundation of Shanxi Province, three Key Science and Technology Projects of Shanxi Province, one Postgraduate Innovation Project and 8 others. The college has 422 academic research projects, 95% of which are focused on environmental impact and project evaluation.
Regarding academic publication, the faculty members have published over 740 essays in academic journals, with 41 essays listed in SCI, in line with 28 academic books. They carried out over 119 national and provincial academic research projects, over 23 national projects and the National Natural Science Foundation. Among these projects, there were 16 reviewed and accepted, and they were also awarded 27 national and provincial awards. The overall research funding reached more than 10 million yuan. All these help to improve the teaching quality and academic research.
The college has been recruiting a lot of faculty with doctorate degrees, in seeing the rising proportions of young faculty members with a higher competence of foreign language. Also, it has sent numerous members to study oversea, or to take an academic visit in oversea universities. During the 11th Five-year Plan period, and even in the earlier 12th Five-year Plan period, the School attended over 40 provincial and national academic conferences, and also invited 28 foreign experts to host lectures or make speeches. Also, the School hosted six academic speeches by foreign academic scholars from Japan, New Zealand and the U.S. In the past seven years, the school has sent 15 fellows to visit oversea universities, improving their competence in international communication.
School of Computer & Information Technology
The School of Computer and Information Technology of Shanxi University was established based on the Department of Computer Science founded in 1980, which has a relatively long history in China
The school has one mobile post-doctoral station of computer science and technology, two primary discipline doctoral programs of computer science and technology and software engineering respectively, one subordinate discipline doctoral program of systems engineering, two primary discipline masters programs of computer science and technology and software engineering respectively, one subordinate discipline masters program of systems engineering, two masters of engineering programs of computer technology and software engineering respectively, two undergraduate programs of computer science and technology and software engineering respectively, one key laboratory of the Ministry of Education in computation intelligence and Chinese information processing, one provincial key laboratory of intelligent information processing, one provincial key discipline of computer application technology. The undergraduate program of computer science and technology is a provincial brand specialty, and has been authorized by the Ministry of Education as a construction site of characteristic specialty.
The school currently has 67 faculty members, including 7 full-time professors, 18 associate professors and 1 senior experimentalist. There are 21 PhD degree holders, 30 master’s degree holders, 7 PhD supervisors and 24 master's supervisors. There are four experts enjoying the special government allowances of the State Council, one included in the Ministry of Education Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University, one awarded with the Shanxi May lst Labour Medal, one selected into the "Shanxi New Century Academic Technology Pioneers-333 Talents" Project, two honored with the "Shanxi Young and Middle-aged Top-Notch Innovative Talents in Colleges and Universities", three provincial Young Academic Leaders, one provincial Young Scientist, three provincial Young Scientific Experts, one provincial Model Teacher, 2 provincial Star Teachers and one distinguished visiting professor included in the Shanxi One Hundred Talent Plan.
The school also employed one academician from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and nine adjunct professors from the Institute of Computing Technology of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University, Xi'an Jiaotong University, City University of Hong Kong, University of Regina, and the Sydney University of Technology. The laboratories of the school cover an area of 2,350 square meters with 1,450 sets of equipment that includes minicomputers for scientific research and teaching, workstations, microcomputers and other equipment. The school library has a collection of more than 20,000 copies of professional books, 45 kinds of academic periodicals from home and abroad, and 24 kinds of domestic and foreign electronic resources including Elsevier Science, Springer, Kluwer, ACM Digital Library, IEEE Transactions and Wangfang Data.
Until now, the school has cultivated 5,043 undergraduates and 577 graduates since its foundation. It is a huge bank of talented and advanced professionals for the Shanxi province, and even extends to the whole country.
Chumin College of Shanxi University
Chumin College takes its name from the first president of Shanxi University after the founding of People’s Republic of China, Deng Chumin. It was founded in 2009, following the introduction of "Chumin" experimental classes in the same academic year. The classes, as part of the Shanxi University's comprehensive implementation of "five transformations" and achievement of "four improvements", were aimed at fostering and cultivating high-quality creative talent and improving training quality.
There are two types of experimental classes in Chumin College that specialize the in arts and sciences, which are designed for students in majors related to Chinese language literature and business administration. Theoretical classes are taught through both general courses and categorical courses; the former of which includes public compulsory courses and public elective courses. As for categorical courses, literature, history, and philosophy are offered for students majoring in arts, while mathematics, economics, and management are offered for students majoring in science-based subjects. Practical teaching is accomplished through the combination of theory teaching and a teaching plan. The teaching program of each major is considered and observed when students of the College are taught professional courses.
With a total of 327 students throughout the four academic year groups, Chumin College boasts 6 teaching instructors, 21 teaching advisors and 46 course teachers. This includes 20 professors, 23 associate professors, 10 doctoral supervisors and 42 master's supervisors. Both the offices and students of Chumin College are housed in the Wenying Building in Shanxi University, which helps to facilitate unified management.
Chumin College has developed various management systems to guarantee that the students have rules to follow during their daily study and life. The College focuses on the cultivation of students'capacity for scientific research and encourages the freshmen to participate in research projects. Student participation and engagement is high, with 197 students currently involved in various research projects, accounting for 62.5% of the total number of students in the college. As well as this, 55 research projects have been applied, including 10 national-level research projects and 3 provincial-level research projects.
